I thought this was a standard technique for Creature to try to get as many spins as possible. I used to think I wasn’t doing anything to help it, but now I know that with good timing this helps get on two crucial extra letters out of a shot to the cup.
This works also on Taxi, but with more limited effectiveness due to how far away it is. I’ve even nudged against the momentum when I think I may have plunged to forcefully and I need to slow the ball down to avoid a low-value opening plunge.
I have no idea if this works on Diner though.
