McSquidification shows a playable playfield of “Sonic Spinball” that uses shots to progress across stages in the Sonic the Hedgehog game. Notice how the music changes as The Player passes each checkpoint in the game which forms each Act of the Sonic game.
After the first two checkpoints, there is a major enemy represented by the center target bank. Defeating it requires The Player to hit the targets enough to open up the center saucer and stall the ball in there to pass the stage.
I can see how the game will be able to show The Player traveling through each stage, getting power-ups, attacking enemies as a reward for making shots, and then showing The Player taking hits and suffering deaths upon draining.
Tangentially related: AC/DC Megaman edition would be awesome!
